Week 5 football roundup: Scores, recaps, top performances

Chatham Central notches its first 5-0 start

Northeast Guilford 31, Southern Durham 22

Southern Durham’s attempt at a comeback against Northeast Guilford fell just short.

Down 17-7 in the third quarter, the Spartans quickly made it a one-point game thanks to a 65-yard touchdown run by senior Lance Henderson and a 27-yard field goal made possible by an interception and long return from sophomore defensive back Jace Harris.

Northeast Guilford started the fourth quarter with a 9-yard rushing score, extending its lead to 24-16. With a little over four minutes left to play, Southern Durham put together one last drive deep into plus territory. The Spartans capped it off with a short touchdown pass from Henderson to senior Jonathan Dillon with 52 seconds left, but the two-point conversion attempt for the tie was unsuccessful.

On the ensuing kickoff, junior Devon Mills caught the Spartans’ onside kick in stride and sprinted to the end zone to ice the game.

With its second straight loss, Southern Durham fell to 2-2 on the season.

Sanderson 48, Chapel Hill 3

Chapel Hill took another tough loss to Sanderson in Week 5.

The Tigers finished their non-conference slate with a 1-4 record.

Franklinton 54, Riverside 0

Things quickly went south in Riverside’s loss to Franklinton.

After a turnover on downs for the Pirates’ offense early in the first quarter, Franklinton pulled off a couple of big plays on the ensuing drive, ending it with a touchdown by senior running back Alijah Durham.

On the Red Rams’ next drive, senior quarterback Josiah Rice rolled left and hit junior Amani Blacknall for a 74-yard score and a 13-0 lead. Then, consecutive penalties on the ensuing kickoff and the play after backed Riverside back to its own 6-yard line. That set the stage for Riverside quarterback Taylen Lea’s pass to be tipped at the line and caught in the end zone by Franklinton’s Micah Johnston.

Franklinton led 26-0 at halftime. Rice finished the game with 201 passing yards and four touchdowns through the air.

Riverside fell to 1-4 on the year.

Wake Forest 35, Hillside 0

After a scoreless first quarter, Wake Forest found the end zone three times in the second period to pull away from Hillside.

The Cougars’ defense stifled the Hornets’ rushing attack in the first half and often put Hillside behind the chains. Wake Forest’s offense came alive in the second quarter with long, physical runs that put the offense in good position to score.

Hillside was shut out for the second time this season and fell to 3-2 on the year.

Eastern Guilford 34, Orange 22

A turnover by the Orange offense helped kickstart Eastern Guilford’s game-changing run.

Orange, leading 14-12, regained possession of the ball after an interception by junior Kamari Ford in the second quarter. Shortly after, the Panthers fumbled the ball, and Eastern Guilford recovered it deep in Orange territory. The Wildcats capitalized on the mistake with a touchdown to go up 20-14.

Eastern Guilford notched two more unanswered scores in the third quarter to build a 20-point lead.

With the loss, Orange fell to 1-3 on the year.

Seaforth 50, North Moore 0

Seaforth once again lit up the scoreboard in a rout over North Moore.

On the first play from scrimmage, senior quarterback Duncan Parker ran 53 yards to the house.

Parker finished the game with four passing touchdowns with juniors Noah Fuller and Mason Pooley hauling in two scores each. It was the third time Parker was responsible for at least five touchdowns this season.

Junior Jude O’Neill ran in a score to give Seaforth a 22-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Hawks’ defense came away with four turnovers, including three fumbles and an interception by junior corner Jace Jones. Sophomore defensive tackle Jeremiah Gilmore picked up a fumble and ran it in for a touchdown in the third quarter to put Seaforth ahead by 50.

Seaforth, continuing its best start in program history, moved to 4-1 on the year.

Providence Grove 45, Jordan-Matthews 6

Jordan-Matthews’ offense, held to single digits for the second time this season, struggled to keep up with Providence Grove.

The Jets coughed up three turnovers, including a fumble and two interceptions. Senior Connor Tozer returned an interception for a touchdown to put the Patriots up 45-6 in the fourth quarter.

Providence Grove rushed for three rushing touchdowns (senior Nick Straughn ran in two), and senior quarterback Landon Fox threw for two scores to give the Patriots a 35-0 lead at halftime.

Jordan-Matthews fell to 2-3 with the loss.

Northwood 21, North Surry 14

Northwood junior Vince Karpf came down with a game-sealing interception at the final buzzer to secure the Chargers’ win over North Surry.

North Surry had to go 23 yards in seven second for its final play. Karpf sniffed out the pass over the middle and snagged the turnover at the goal line.

With turnovers and big stands deep in its own territory, Northwood’s defense came up huge all night.

Senior defensive back Jackson Freeman intercepted a pass on North Surry’s first possession, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Brody Murchinson on the ensuing drive. North Surry junior Jhett Tolbert returned the following kickoff for a score, and after a 67-yard touchdown sprint for Northwood junior Aiden Girard, sophomore Kingston Williams punched in the Greyhounds’ only offensive score on a short run in the second quarter.

Down 14-13 late in the fourth, senior Raje Torres ran 10 yards to the end zone to put the Chargers ahead with 55 seconds left to play. Torres also hauled in the successful two-point conversion.

Northwood improved to 2-3 on the season.

Chatham Central 30, Winston-Salem Prep 24

Chatham Central junior Gavin Williams scored the go-ahead touchdown that cemented the 2026 Bears in history.

With the game tied at 24 with 14 seconds left to play, junior quarterback Brooks Albright found Williams, who then ran through contact and reached the ball over the goal line to give the Bears a six-point lead with four seconds on the clock. Chatham Central held strong on the ensuing possession, securing its first 5-0 start in school history.

Albright finished the game with two rushing touchdowns, including a two-yard score that tied the game with just over one minute left to play in the fourth quarter.

Following Albright’s game-tying touchdown, junior defensive back Nolan Mitchell snagged an interception and was tackled at the Winston-Salem Prep 15-yard line, setting up the game-winning score.

In the second quarter, junior safety Matthew Victorino also came down with an interception and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown, giving the Bears a 16-8 lead.

Chatham Central, now 1-0 in Greater Triad 1A/2A conference play, is one of two undefeated teams in the NCHSAA 1A classification.
