Volleyball

East Chapel Hill hosted the Wildcat Invitational this weekend, finishing as the runner-up after a 3-0 loss to West Forsyth.

Carrboro also competed at the Wildcat Invitational, defeating Felton Grove 3-1 and Jordan 3-0 before being swept by West Forsyth. The Jaguars closed out the weekend with a 3-1 win over East Surry. Prior to the tournament, Durham Academy edged Carrboro 3-2. The Jaguars led 2-1 after winning the third set 28-26, but the Cavaliers took the final two sets (25-21 and 15-10) to complete the comeback.

Seaforth and Chapel Hill both fell in the HighSchoolOT Volleyball Showcase Saturday as the Hawks lost to Hoggard 3-1, and the Tigers lost to Green Level 3-0.

Earlier in the week, Seaforth took its first loss of the season to Cardinal Gibbons 3-0 and bounced back with consecutive sweeps over Ayden-Grifton and Northwood. Chapel Hill also defeated Ayden-Grifton 3-1 Tuesday.

Cedar Ridge moved to 5-0 on the season with big wins over Jordan (3-1), Southeast Alamance (3-0) and Person (3-1). The Fighting Red Wolves have only given up two sets this year.

Northern Durham is also 5-0 after beating Williams 3-2 Thursday. After losing its 2-0 lead, the Knights won the final set 15-8.

Woods Charter extended its win streak to three with wins over Vance Charter (3-1), The Hawbridge School (3-0) and Eno River Academy (3-0). Research Triangle is on a four-game win streak after sweeping Franklin Academy, Neuse Charter and Raleigh Charter during the week.

After a 3-0 win over Person, Orange fell to defending 1A state champions Falls Lake 3-2. The Panthers dominated two sets but lost the third frame 27-25 and the decisive fifth set 15-7.

Southern Durham is off to its best three-game start in recent memory (at least 19 years) after the Spartans bounced back from its season-opening loss with consecutive sweeps over Durham Charter and Vance County.

Boys’ soccer

Numerous local teams competed in the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association Select Soccer Kick-Off Classic last week. Here are the results from the event.

Chapel Hill dominated Hough 4-1. Four different Tigers (Noah Devrieze, Miles Tobolski, Eliot Werley and Oliver Schmidler) scored.

Carrboro bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 2-0 win over Franklin Academy. Senior Manny Bastidas notched both goals in the win.

Jordan posted a second straight clean sheet (9-0 win over Excelsior Classical Academy Tuesday) with a 4-0 win over Southern Lee.

Research Triangle won its first two games of the season, defeating Spring Creek 2-1 and shutting out Triad Math and Science 3-0.

NCSSM-Durham fell to Winston-Salem Christian 5-3.

Orange tied with First Flight 2-2.

Northwood tied with Central Academy of Technology and Arts 2-2 and followed that with a 2-0 win over Grace Christian (Sanford).

Riverside lost its second straight game to Corinth Holders 1-0.

Jordan-Matthews took its first loss of the season to Fike 7-2.

Girls’ Tennis

Chapel Hill defeated Seaforth 6-3 Thursday, winning four of six singles and two of three doubles. Prior to the loss, Seaforth defeated Cedar Ridge 8-1 and Durham School of the Arts 9-0.

Orange extended its win streak to four with a 9-0 victory over Northwood, but Carrboro ended it in an 8-1 loss.

Riverside defeated Jordan 6-3 to win its third match in four outings. The Pirates won four of six singles and two of three doubles.

Research Triangle dominated Durham School of the Arts 9-0.

Chapel Hill defeated Northwood at Twin Lakes GC by a score of 148-180 Thursday.

Northwood finished first ahead of Chatham Central and Graham with a score of 170 Tuesday at Siler City CC.
