Former Seaforth star Gabby White to join Nigerian National Team on international tour

White will help Nigeria prepare for the FIBA World Cup.

Former Seaforth basketball star Gabby White is adding another entry to her growing international resume.

White will join the Nigerian National Team for three games against China from Monday to Aug. 14 in Haikou, China. Before the trip overseas, she’s attending Nigeria’s training camp in Chicago, which will end Sunday.

The international tour is part of Nigeria’s preparation for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin from Sept. 4-13. After the games in China, White will miss Nigeria’s exhibition matches in Spain, but she will be back with the team for the World Cup. Nigeria, placed in Group B, will begin the World Cup against Korea on Sept. 4.

Earlier this year, White played with Nigeria during its WNBA preseason tour, seeing minutes in games against the Los Angeles Sparks and the Minnesota Lynx.

Against the Sparks, she recorded seven points, four assists, two rebounds and two steals in an 89-63 loss. She followed that with 16 points (50% shooting clip), seven rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block in an 88-79 loss to the Lynx.

White’s connection with Nigeria goes further back. Her mother, North Carolina women’s basketball associate head coach Joanne Aluka-White, helped Nigeria win its first Olympic contest in its history during the 2004 Summer Games.

After leading Seaforth High School to multiple regional final appearances and a state championship game, White began her college career at Virginia last winter. She appeared in 34 games (three starts) and averaged 6.1 points and 3.4 rebounds, helping the Cavaliers make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018 and their first Sweet 16 since 2000. She transferred to UNC for her upcoming sophomore season.
